Description
This simple method for cooking basmati rice results in perfectly fluffy, separated grains with minimal effort. Using just rice and water, the technique involves simmering the rice without a lid initially, then cooking it covered on low heat to allow gentle steam absorption, creating light and aromatic rice perfect for pairing with a variety of dishes.
Ingredients
Scale
Ingredients
- 1 cup uncooked basmati rice
- 1 1/2 cups water (cold tap water)
Instructions
- Prepare Rice and Water: Place the uncooked basmati rice and water in a medium-sized saucepan over medium-high heat without a lid.
- Bring to Simmer: Heat until the edges of the water start bubbling, the middle ripples gently, and the surface shows foaming, indicating it is simmering.
- Cover and Reduce Heat: Immediately place a tight-fitting lid on the saucepan and reduce the heat to medium low (or low if using a strong stove).
- Cook Without Lifting Lid: Let the rice cook for 12 minutes undisturbed. Avoid lifting the lid to maintain the steam inside.
- Check Water Absorption: Quickly tilt the saucepan and take a very brief peek to ensure all the water has been absorbed, then immediately replace the lid.
- Rest the Rice: Remove the pan from the heat and let it sit with the lid on for 5 to 10 minutes, allowing the steam to finish cooking and fluff the rice.
- Fluff and Serve: Use a fork to gently fluff the rice and enjoy perfectly fluffy basmati rice.
Notes
- For larger batches, increase cooking time slightly: 13 minutes for 2 cups, 15 minutes for 4 cups.
- Do not lift the lid during cooking to ensure proper steam retention and fluffiness.
- Use a pot suitable to the rice quantity to allow proper cooking.
- Use cold tap water as per recipe instructions for best texture.
