Ingredients
Scale
Sauce Ingredients
- 1 tbsp Hoisin Sauce (or substitute with Oyster Sauce)
- 2 tbsp Oyster Sauce (or substitute with 1 1/2 tbsp Hoisin Sauce)
- 1 tbsp Chinese cooking wine (or Mirin, dry sherry, sake, or any rice wine)
- 2 1/2 tbsp dark soy sauce
- 2 tsp white sugar
- 1/2 tsp sesame oil
- 1/4 tsp white pepper (or substitute with black pepper)
Main Ingredients
- 1 tbsp oil
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 500 g / 1 lb lean beef mince (ground beef)
- 1/2 cup shallots/scallions, sliced (plus more for garnish)
- Sesame seeds, for garnish
Instructions
- Mix the Sauce: In a bowl, combine hoisin sauce, oyster sauce, Chinese cooking wine, dark soy sauce, white sugar, sesame oil, and white pepper. Stir well until the sugar is dissolved and the sauce is evenly mixed.
- Cook Aromatics: Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over high heat. Add the minced garlic and finely chopped onion, cooking for about 1 minute or until the onion just begins to brown, releasing its aroma.
- Brown the Beef: Add the lean beef mince to the skillet. Break up the meat as it cooks, ensuring it is evenly browned and no longer pink.
- Add the Sauce and Simmer: Pour the prepared sauce over the browned beef. Continue cooking for another 2 minutes, allowing the sauce to reduce and coat the beef. If you prefer your beef well-cooked and the mixture becomes dry, add a splash of water and cook longer. Otherwise, proceed as is.
- Finish with Shallots and Serve: Stir in the sliced shallots or scallions, mixing them through the beef. Serve the beef mixture hot over cooked rice or, for a low-carb option, cauliflower rice. Garnish with extra shallots and a sprinkle of sesame seeds to add flavor and texture.
Notes
- Substitute Hoisin for Oyster sauce or vice versa depending on availability for slightly different flavor profiles.
- Chinese cooking wine can be replaced with Mirin, dry sherry, sake, or any rice wine.
- Use lean beef mince to reduce grease and improve texture.
- For a lower carbohydrate option, serve the beef over cauliflower rice instead of traditional rice.
- White pepper can be substituted with black pepper if preferred.
- Adding a splash of water during cooking helps to keep the beef moist if desired.
