  • Author: Noah
  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

Delight in the warm, comforting flavors of Spiced French Toast made with soft cinnamon butter and fluffy hot cross buns. This easy-to-make breakfast treat is pan-fried to a golden perfection and served with vanilla ice cream and maple syrup for a perfect balance of spice and sweetness.

Ingredients

Scale

Butter and Spice Mix

  • 4 tbsp soft butter
  • 2 tsp cinnamon

Egg Mixture

  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 100ml milk
  • 1 tsp cinnamon (from the total 2 tsp)

Main Ingredients

  • 4 hot cross buns, split in half

Serving

  • Vanilla ice cream, to serve
  • Maple syrup, to serve

Instructions

  1. Prepare Cinnamon Butter: Mix 3 tablespoons of the soft butter with half of the cinnamon (1 teaspoon) and mash together until well combined to create a spiced butter spread.
  2. Make Egg Mixture: In a separate bowl, beat together the eggs, milk, and the remaining cinnamon (1 teaspoon) thoroughly until the mixture is smooth and uniform.
  3. Assemble Buns: Sandwich two slices of hot cross bun together with half of the cinnamon butter mixture, spreading it evenly between the pairs. Repeat with the remaining two buns.
  4. Soak Buns: Dip each buttered bun sandwich into the egg mixture, letting them soak for a few seconds to absorb the liquid but not become overly soggy.
  5. Cook on Stovetop: Heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter in a frying pan over medium heat until it foams. Place the soaked buns in the pan and cook for 1-2 minutes on each side or until they are lightly golden. Press down gently on the buns while cooking to ensure even browning. You may need to cook the buns in two batches depending on pan size.
  6. Serve: Plate the toasted sandwiches and top each portion with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and drizzle with maple syrup as desired for a deliciously indulgent finish.

Notes

  • Use chocolate hot cross buns and swap cinnamon for 1 tsp vanilla extract with a spread of Nutella for a chocolate variation.
  • This recipe works best with fresh hot cross buns for a tender texture.
  • Pressing the buns down while cooking helps achieve a nice golden crust.
  • Serve immediately for the best combination of warm toast and melting ice cream.
