Ingredients
Scale
Puff Pastry Base
- 1 sheet puff pastry
Toppings
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheese
- 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
- 4 large eggs
- Kosher salt, to taste
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- Fresh dill, to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and for easy cleanup.
- Prepare Puff Pastry: Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface and cut it into 4 equal squares. Place these squares on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 8 to 10 minutes until they turn golden and puffed.
- Deflate Puff Pastry Centers: Remove the puff pastry squares from the oven and allow them to cool slightly on the baking sheet. Using the back of a fork, gently press down the center of each square to create a shallow well, leaving a border around the edges to keep the egg contained.
- Add Cheese: Evenly sprinkle 1 1/2 cups shredded cheese into the deflated centers of each puff pastry square. This cheesy layer will complement the eggs perfectly.
- Assemble Tarts: Carefully crack one large egg into the center of each tart on top of the cheese. Distribute cherry tomato halves over the tarts. Season each tart generously with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to enhance the flavors.
- Bake to Finish: Return the tarts to the oven and bake for 10 to 15 minutes, or until the egg whites are fully set but the yolks remain slightly runny (or to your preferred doneness).
- Garnish and Serve: Remove the tarts from the oven and sprinkle fresh dill over the top. Serve warm and enjoy your savory breakfast tart.
Notes
- For extra flavor, consider adding cooked bacon or sautéed spinach before adding the eggs.
- You can customize the cheese to your preference; cheddar, mozzarella, or a cheese blend all work well.
- Be sure to leave a good border on the puff pastry to contain the egg and prevent spilling during baking.
- Adjust baking time slightly if you prefer fully cooked yolks or softer eggs.
- Fresh dill can be substituted with fresh parsley or chives for a different herbal note.
