  • Author: Noah
  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: 4 sandwiches 1x

Description

A creamy and flavorful tuna sandwich featuring a rich tuna filling mixed with mayonnaise, celery, dill pickles, Dijon mustard, fresh herbs, and green onions, served on buttered bread with crisp butter lettuce for a satisfying and easy-to-make meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Tuna Filling

  • 425g / 15 oz canned tuna in oil, drained (Note 1)
  • 3/4 cup whole egg mayonnaise or Kewpie (Note 2)
  • 3/4 cup finely diced celery (1 stalk, cut lengthwise, then finely diced)
  • 5 tbsp finely chopped dill pickle (Note 3)
  • 2 tbsp liquid from pickle jar (Note 3)
  • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 3 tbsp finely chopped dill (or parsley or basil)
  • 1/3 cup finely sliced green onion (~2 stems) (Note 4)
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

Sandwich Assembly

  • 8 pieces butter lettuce (2 leaves per sandwich)
  • Salted butter, for spreading
  • 8 slices bread or 4 rolls (Note 5)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Filling: In a bowl, combine the drained tuna, whole egg mayonnaise, finely diced celery, chopped dill pickles, pickle liquid, Dijon mustard, chopped fresh dill, sliced green onions, and black pepper. Use a wooden spoon to mix thoroughly while breaking up the tuna so the filling becomes fairly smooth. Crushing the pickles and celery during mixing helps meld the flavors together.
  2. Assemble Sandwiches: Butter each slice of bread on one side. Place 2 pieces of butter lettuce on the unbuttered side of one slice per sandwich. Divide the tuna filling evenly among the sandwiches, spreading it on top of the lettuce. Close the sandwiches with the remaining bread slices, butter side up. Serve immediately and enjoy your tasty homemade tuna sandwiches!

Notes

  • Note 1: Use canned tuna packed in oil and drain it well for best flavor and texture.
  • Note 2: Whole egg mayonnaise or Japanese Kewpie mayonnaise both work well to provide creaminess.
  • Note 3: Use dill pickles finely chopped and include some of the pickle liquid for extra tanginess.
  • Note 4: Green onions add a subtle onion flavor; slice them finely for even distribution.
  • Note 5: Use your preferred bread such as sandwich bread or rolls; buttering enhances richness and prevents sogginess.
